Roundup at UT. if you're from Texas, you've heard of it, been to it, or know people who have. It's basically one massive party for all the fraternities at UT. Picture massive amounts of people, incredible performers, and neon fanny packs everywhere. everybody in Greek life goes there, and often high schoolers who know they're not only headed to Austin the following year but also into Greek life attend. sometimes even fellow Greeks from other schools in Texas attend. As you can imagine, all these people (mostly intoxicated) can cause issues. According to the Daily Texan, this past year there were reports of a woman getting assaulted and apparently racist intentions behind it. The article also references other racist incidences that have occurred in the past. This was definitely something new to me. I had always viewed it as one big party, although now it's evident that even things with the purest intentions can end up bad. As a Greek community we cannot tolerate this behavior. If we expect the community outside Greek life to respect us, we must not allow things like this to occur. Eventually the administration will cut down on any and all events which could produce these types of offenses.

some pictures from roundup this past year
"After the annual parade on April 6, 1990, a fraternity decorated one of the floats with inflammatory racial slurs. Another fraternity sold T-shirts for a basketball tournament with an image of Michael Jordan’s body and a Sambo character’s head, said James Vick, former UT vice president for student affairs. The Sambo character portrayed African-Americans as lazy and with ape-like facial features.

Reading things like this really really upsets me. You would think after all that our country has been through and how long it took to end segregation even after slavery was abolished that people would maybe stop trying to set us back. It truly baffles me that people would so publicly make racist comments (on tshirts, come on!) I know this happened in 1990 but still! That may have been twenty years ago but we know stuff like this still goes on and I hear greek members making comments like these all of the time. As a community that "wants" people to take them more seriously and recognize their achievements, they sure do a good job of making us all look like fools!
although round up sounds like a ton of fratty fun, i don't think racial slurs have any place in the greek community. its nuts to me that we have these issues in the first place, but it is disappointing that it has manifested itself in the greek community. it just gives us all a bad reputation. i hope that administration can step it up and figure out some way to deal with these issues.
